“The practice among those with power or influence of favouring their own, namely relatives or friends.”
A deeper research brings about catagories of nepotism. The word itself means partiality to family, CRONYISM refers to partiality to an associate or friend and FAVOURITISM, a more common term, refers to partiality based upon being part of a favoured group, rather than job performance.
I find it quite interesting how some have evolved exceptionally from apes to mega beings, making great discoveries known as “The secret chambers of nepotism”. Its not that our generation is the one just experiencing nepotism (but surely we are on the edge), it had already been pointed out by philosophers long ago. In the second book of the Kural literature, which forms a manual for governments and corporations, Valluvar suggests about nepotism and favouritism: “If you choose an unfit person for your job just because you love and you like him, he will lead you to endless follies.”According to him, nepotism is not just unwise its evil. But surely some have not read that.
Today it is treated as power, power to disparage competition , pouring scorn over those who are worthy and even threatening them of being talented. They say “yes I’m my father’s daughter and yes I am here because of him and yes I’m privileged. That’s not an insult, my father has worked very hard to give me all of this. And it is my karma where I’m born and to whom I’m born. I’m proud to be his daughter -Sonam kapoor.” It is important to know that our karma is not what we are born with, its what we are today. And films like “Aisha”, “Prem ratan dhan payo” and many more are no comparison to “kai po che”,” M S Dhoni: The untold story”, “Chhichhore” and the rest that follow.
The definition of nepotism needs improvement. Today they don’t just favour their own but religate the worthy. A better idea is tossed. A better person is doomed. We need to learn that the name should be ours that shine and work should be ours that is applauded. Lets be worthy, just and fair, have faith that we shall thrive and we will. Lets teach our children that my kingdom is not for you to rule unless you earn it; that my name does not define you but it is yours that shall shine. Lets help them gain pride in their work not insecurity that once the worthy shall replace them. The world needs to change. We need to change.
